CHAPTER NINETEEN

By the time Jasmine had left the quarters, she looked like a completely different person.

Her hair had been carefully combed out and done in hundreds of uniform plaits that framed her face, interwoven with strands of gold that tapered towards the ends and make it look like they were all dipped in the precious metal. The dress she had on, and the accompanying long jacket that she wore over it were made of gossamer, yet the many layers that made up the flowy garment concealed the most of her figure. Airy greens with a hint of gold composed the majority of the dress, and her jacket had a thick embroidered edge to it that sported vines and flowers in bloom. There was a light sash that defined her waist, and the rest was as free flowing as she assumed many Draconians preferred their clothes to be. Jasmine would always have an appreciation for the heavier Victorian-esque styles that Hellenia was known for, but she also liked not being weighed down for the time being.

She followed one of the handmaidens through the colorful halls, their footsteps muted by the plush carpet until they came to a set of screen doors. Once they were pushed apart, they were greeted by a large room meant for entertaining, with a large lacquered table and loads of seating scattered about. But Jasmine’s attention settled on the occupants of the room, one of which she recognized as Kai, and the other being a burly man leaning against a wall facing him. At the sound of the doors opening, both of them turned their attention to the women in their midst, and the handmaiden bowed politely before stepping aside to give Jasmine the floor.

“This style suits you well,” Kai smiled as he sat up from his casual position, then nodded to the other man with him. “Nemeer shows his regards.”

Before Jasmine could respond, Nemeer crossed the room and enveloped her in a bear hug that lifted her at least a foot off of the ground. She squeaked in surprise, but he just seemed to glaze over it in his excitement. “I’m sorry if I scared you earlier… really feel bad about that,” he sheepishly told her before letting her down. “I just wanted to see you for myself before you got here.”

“It’s all good,” Jasmine replied, feeling her arms tingle from how tightly he had held her. This man seriously does not know his own strength at all. Yet, he had an earnest air about him that made it impossible to hold anything against him. Even for as big as Nemeer obviously was, she knew she had to get used to existing around beings that only wore a human skin and encompassed the spirit of the grand beasts they actually were. “Thanks for… well, giving me the first-class aerial view.”

Nemeer grinned widely. “Of course! You’re the guest of the hour, after all. When you get to visit Favonius, I’ll show you the beaches we have and where I like to work out, and-"

“Don’t overwhelm her,” Kai chided gently.
